When people learned we were going to New Orleans for Imaging USA they always mentioned one of two things: the music or the wildness of the place. My impression of the Big Easy? She reminds me of an old lady who forgot to put away her Christmas decorations…. Festive. And yet sad.The colors and textures of the place were absolutely amazing!
Favorite.You knew we’d have to bring the cheese to Bourbon street!

Extreme Home Makeover Joplin

Never have I felt so proud to be part of a community.

The months since the tornado hit Joplin have been a strange mix of struggles and triumphs. This city has been weary, but it has never been weak. Joplin has been in pain, but never overcome by it. When I first documented the aftermath of the tornado on the blog, it was a way of reaching out for support… and it came. It came in vanloads of people wielding chainsaws, in truckload after semi-truckload of bottled water and laundry detergent and building supplies. It came in the form of thousands upon thousands of prayers lifted up for this community throughout the country. And more recently it came in the form of a television show. We were blessed to be among the thousands and thousands of volunteers who joined together to bring homes to seven families, to renew the spirit of hope in Joplin, and to share the resilience of this community.
This security guard was so sweet. First he tried to get out of my picture (not realizing it was HIM I was trying to photograph), then he gave me a hug. Love those not-so-tough tough guys.This little kewpie doll of a girl was the daughter of one of the builders. She was so adorable I could not stop taking her picture!I just missed the shot, but I think this producer actually spit-shined Ty’s hair….The crowd went wild when Ty was around…and he had some serious fans!!!I KNOW!These guys worked on… you guessed it! Thank you Extreme Home Makeover, for bringing joy to Joplin. Many volunteers who gave of their time had their own heartaches from that day in May. You gave us a place to be of help, and that is how we heal.

The Joplin episode airs this Friday night the 13th.

Oklahoma City sessions!

It’s true. We had a SUPER time visiting friends and family and doing sessions in Oklahoma City! Here’s a sneak peek!Sam has the most gorgeous AND expressive face!We love our friends the Scotts! No relation to us, so we call these kiddos the “un-cousins”!Ben loves his buddy Drew. So hard to have a photo session in the park… have to wait till it’s over to play!Now this is some SERIOUS Oklahoma red dirt. No photoshop color here!The Sims were crazy fun!The entire Harris family should be featured on a GAP ad. They are seriously photogenic!and to think that someone told me before the session that Kamryn was going to be camera shy!This shot just makes me laugh!And the sweet Medley family! This is our third year photographing them. Last year it rained the entire day of our photo session! This year? Perfection!!! Love these images.This picture is begging for a couple of thought bubbles floating above their heads….Thanks so much to all our OKC clients. We had such fun spending time with you all. Tornado Memorial Book

With the excitement of Extreme Home Makeover coming to Joplin next week, everyone is focusing on efforts to help Joplin tornado victims. I wanted to remind you of one more! It was my pleasure to work with Show Me the Ozarks magazine as photo editor on this memorial book commemorating the events of May 22, 2011 and beyond. This 32 page magazine style book is filled with amazing photographs taken by both myself and many of the area’s best photographers. It includes personal articles that are both heartbreaking and inspiring. All proceeds from the sale of the book go to the Joplin Tornado Relief Fund. Lubbock

This has been a crazy season of traveling for us, and it’s been such a blessing to be able to see and experience so many interesting places – and to meet and interact with so many wonderful new friends. In the case of Lubbock, TX – it was David’s extended family we got to spend time with… and, of course, photograph. Enjoy this sampling of photos from our week in what I like to think of as the flattest place on earth! These were shot on campus at Texas Tech. Gorgeous architecture!Precious. Favorite.Oh wait! Another favorite!I love the contrasts in this session: perfectly posed family…Real family!Sweetly smiling brothers…The REAL personalities!Farm session!That’s the way a real cowboy smooches!Now this is West Texas to me. Dirt roads and wide skies.
Another favorite. I guess there are advantages to all that flat land. Lets the sunset spread out nice and wide. Sigh.

The Wedding of Leah & Scott

Whoever said rain on your wedding day is good luck clearly had not been planning an elaborate outdoor ceremony for months… like Leah and Scott. I think if that person would have been in the immediate vicinity of this wedding party Saturday morning – they might have gotten a knuckle sandwich. Instead, it seems that all the frustration turned into prayers for a parting of the clouds and a lifting of the spirits, because by the time the ceremony began – both had occurred. Here’s a peek inside this lovely, heart-felt day.It’s been almost 12 years since my own wedding day, and I can say with a good degree of certainty that the wedding day is actually quite a lot like marriage itself…

it’s rarely exactly what you planned -

and never perfect,

but when you focus on the love you have for each other – it all turns out beautifully.
Our heartfelt congratulations to Scott & Leah. May your marriage be blessed beyond measure.

Circle of Life

I hope this doesn’t end up sounding cheesy, because I really want to try my best to be cheese-free on the blog – but I have to say that this session was a bit of a “circle of life” moment for me. Because this is my lifelong friend Scott. One of the two brothers who I grew up having adventures with – putting on circus performances in their backyard, building massive tent-forts in their playroom and rigging up their red wagon so we could “drive” it down the (what seemed to me to be) giant hill in front of their house. Scott’s dad Wes was the camera buff when I was a little girl. The best pictures of me during my childhood were taken by him. He was actually the first person to photograph me, right after I was born – in the hospital. And now? I’m the one who gets to photograph his first-born grandson – just three days old. What a privilege.

Scott and his wife Keri live in New York now, so we were able to visit them on our trip there a couple weeks ago. Keri is beauty-queen gorgeous and as kind as she is lovely. Baby Holden is going to be one handsome little guy.

You know it’s going to be a precious photo when folks start crying during the session. : )

Experiencing New York City

There are several pictures I consider quintessential New York. One is the Statue of Liberty. Another is Times Square. And then there’s this one. Grand Central Station. What this photo really needs is to be centered around a bride or a romantic couple kissing. Instead? You get Dave. Of course I still like it. : )This trip gave me a brand spankin’ new appreciation of iphones – or rather, the iphone camera. Some of my favorite images from the trip were taken not with our professional Canon 5D, but with Dave’s tiny phone. This one’s in Brooklyn out our hotel room window.
Found this little gem of a “Stewart Little” house over in Brooklyn Heights. Don’t you just want to go knock on the door and find out what kind of person lives there? My bet is an older single lady. Definitely doilies on the backs of the chairs. And she would most certainly invite us in for some delicious beverage.Here’s a really good thing we discovered in New York. Street food!This little Mexican spot under the Brooklyn Bridge was our favorite!
Here is a bad thing we discovered in New York. The subway at rush hour. What were we thinking? But really, when part of your job is documenting life, it’s less annoying when these things happen because you know someone will eventually enjoy your misery. I was wedged in the corner, out of speaking distance from Dave, mouthing “GET A PICTURE”. My favorite part of the trip was checking “See a Broadway Show” off my bucket list. It was amazing! And, for someone who grits her teeth at paying $10 for a movie theater ticket, quite a treat. : )
Another thrill going to Anthropologie at their New York City location. Creativity overload! Look at this window display! Those are old slides they’ve attached together and backlit. Brilliant. I could easily do this at home with the very – um – interesting – slides that David has from his high school trip to Russia. Of course, it would be TERRIBLE if we weren’t able to view them anymore as a slideshow…. Movie night anyone?The best free ride in New York is the Staten Island Ferry. Great views of the city, and the complete cattle herding experience!My view of lower Manhattan from the ferry.In another life, I would love to be this pigeon, who bathes in the fountain in front of the Plaza Hotel. Pampered snotty bird.This photo of the windows at the Plaza may be one of my favorites of the trip. There is just something about this that I love. Not even sure what. It’s just so… lush.This is a very sad thing. Professional photographers and this is the only photo of the two of us together for the whole trip. At least Dave has long arms.Another view of Times Square. Clearly this town has something for everyone! The one person I really wanted to photograph and didn’t was a lady we saw in Brooklyn who had a large, full-color tatoo of the virgin Mary on her chest. There are just so many things I could say about that. Or not.I can’t tell you how badly I wanted to have the kids with us when we visited the New York City public library. I could just see their little silhouettes running down this hallway in the amazing light. A beautiful building.And then there’s the Freak Show at Coney Island. Yes we saw it AND made the mistake of sitting on the front row. It was convenient then for the man with fish hooks in his eyes to rush off the stage and… well, I just don’t even want to talk about it. But I swear it’s true. Traumatizing and true.The hot dog we got from Nathan’s at Coney Island was fine, but I think it’s famous just because, well, it’s famous. Kind of like Paris Hilton. Our favorite area of NYC was the West Village. Not only because it was so architecturally beautiful, but really so informative.Took this picture for my sister Sarah, the music teacher. It looks like a movie set. Molly Ringwald and Jon Cryer walked out right after I took this. : )Every time I travel I find myself expanding – mentally and physically. I love seeing how other people live and the way they experience life. I love meeting locals, from our cabbie who recommended a great pizza place to the crazy lady in the donut shop who told me I should douche with sea salt (for the record, I wasn’t asking). After all, life really is all about the people you meet and the places you see & experience. Oh, and of course for me… the pictures you take.
